Nitrocellulose,
 
richtiger Cellulosenitrat, als Pulver oder in flockiger Form vorliegende weiße Masse, die durch Nitrierung von Cellulose (Baumwolllinters oder Zellstoff) mit Nitriersäure hergestellt wird. Nach dem Abzentrifugieren der überschüssigen Säure wird das Produkt mit Wasser gewaschen und im Autoklaven gekocht. In der Nitrocellulose sind die freien Hydroxylgruppen der Cellulosemoleküle mehr oder weniger vollständig mit Salpetersäure verestert. Nitrocellulose wird mit unterschiedlichem Veresterungsgrad (Stickstoffgehalt) und Polymerisationsgrad der Cellulose (unterschiedliche Viskosität) hergestellt. Trockene Nitrocellulose verpufft beim Erhitzen. Sie ist reib- und schlagempfindlich. Nitrocellulose mit bis zu 12,6 % Stickstoffgehalt wird als Kollodiumwolle, ab 13 % Stickstoffgehalt als Schießwolle bezeichnet. Als Bindemittel für Lacke und zur Herstellung von Celluloid dient Kollodiumwolle. Für Explosivstoffe (Pulverwolle) werden Schießwolle und Pulverkollodiumwolle (für Sprenggelatine) verwendet.
